Meaningless thoughts running round my head can only amuse me for a short time...

...or so you may think. Today I was thinking why on earth coke tastes better in glass bottles? My next thought was why do so few places sell coke in glass bottles? This was closely followed by why can you not buy beer in plastic bottles?

This stumped me somewhat. I'm kind of assuming that plastic bottles are cheaper to produce than their glass counterparts, this explained the reasoning why most places stocked coke in plastic bottles. But then I thought, why the hell can you not buy beer in plastic bottles. I've bought cider in plastic bottles, whiskey in plastic bottles, but never beer. Why is this?

If someone could explain this to me it would be appreciated.

I've had beer from plastic bottles -- but only at festivals/concerts. As a North American who prefers her beer really cold, I think plastic bottles would ruin the icy cold awesomeness of beer on a hot day...
